Ford set to put up prices again

  • Prices to go up by four per cent
  • Third price rise in seven months
  • Other manufacturers set to do the same
  • Warnings that more increases could happen

Ford has announced it will increase the price across its entire range of cars for the third time this year. From July 1, the manufacturer will put up the cost by an average of four per cent.

The latest increase means buyers will be paying an extra £600 to £650 on some of the most popular models like Ka, Fiesta, Focus and Mondeo; with an extra £700 to pay on a Ford S-MAX and £800 on top of Ford Galaxy prices.

This will take the entry level Ford Fiesta from £9995 over the £10,000 mark to £10,595 while a new Focus entry level Studio will go from £13,995 to £14,595.

This third price rise means that Ford has put up prices by an average of 12.5 per cent since January. The last increase in April saw the price go up by 3.75 per cent and was the second rise in just eight weeks.

The manufacturer has put the third increase down to the continuous poor performance of the Pound against the Euro and warned that the huge loss in revenue earlier this year could lead to even more price increases. The rise is set to affect all cars ordered after 30 June.

Parker's also understands that at least two other manufacturers are set to follow Ford with price increases of their own.

These successive price rises will cancel out most of the saving made by customers choosing to participate in the Government scrappage scheme, compared with the price of models at the end of 2008.

But despite these price increases, buyers can still make big savings by going for a pre-registered model.

We found a Ford Mondeo Estate Titanium X Sport model available for £20,989 - more than £7000 off the on-the-road price. These deals aren't just available on the bigger models but can also be found on a new Fiesta. Buyers can save £2600 on a pre-reg 1.25-litre Style model on offer at £7995 from Arnold Clark.

Funny how FIAT dont seem to have the same problem with the exchange rate. My son and I have both ordered new Fiat's under the scrappage scheme, we did look at Ford but price and spec fell a long way short. The first weekend of the scrappage scheme, our nearest Fiat dealership took orders for 35 new cars. Interesting marketing concept by Ford though, if the cars aren't selling put the price up!

The Launch price of the Ford Fiesta 1.25 82PS Zetec 3 Door in October 2008 was £10,995.00 at a VAT rate of 17.5%. The July 2009 price for the same Ford car is £12,895.00 at a VAT rate of 15%. Allowing for the VAT adjustment this represents a 20% increase in 9 months. In October 2008 £1 = 1.2888 Euros and today(30/06/2009) £1 = 1.1760. This represents a weakening of the pound of 6.5% since last October. Ford cannot blame the weak pound for the additional 13.5% price increase.

I was looking to buy a new buget car under the scrappage scheme, Perodua have recently joined the scheme and the Myvi is basically a cheaper Daihatsu Sirion, but I found the price had increased and although there was a 1000 pounds cash back offer it wasn't available if using the scrappage scheme, this seems like cheating the system to me as they are effectively not honouring their 1K discount by juggeling the figures and more main stream manufacturers eg Fiat start to look more attractive.
