The handsome old 5-Series only started to show its age when its replacement came along in 1996. BMW's executive contender was perhaps the best car in its class when launched in 1988. Even today its high quality construction, smooth engines, classy interior are appreciated by owners. Minus points are steep service costs and a growing image problem by association with 'flash geezers' who haven't the money to keep one in good nick.
