Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe (17-23) rivals
Overview
Is the Mercedes-Benz E-Class any good?
The E-Class Coupe is a four-seater coupe from Mercedes-Benz, which is positioned between the smaller C-Class Coupe and larger S-Class Coupe in the German manufacturer’s sprawling range. It’s been around since 2017, but the latest version was facelifted in 2020 to keep it competitive – something that Mercedes has successfully achieved.
Despite being a familiar body style, the E-Class Coupe actually has few direct rivals. The BMW 4 Series is perhaps closest in concept, though it’s more of a rival for the C-Class and doesn’t offer the generous accommodation of the Mercedes.
With so few rivals, and many carmakers pulling out of the Coupe market sector, you might be excused for concluding that Mercedes-Benz has phoned-in the E-Class – but it hasn’t. It’s an excellent car further improved by its recent facelift. Read on to find why.

What’s it like inside?
The E-class Coupe is comfort-focused and luxurious first and foremost, with a plush interior, high-quality materials and excellent build quality. The driver’s seat is supportive and comfortable, with all touchpoints oozing quality – from the door pulls to the steering wheel and transmission selector.
The interior experience is dominated to some degree by the large twin-screen set-up for the instrumentation and infotainment set-up. It’s easy to use and a model of clarity, and massively assisted by the firm’s brilliant MBUX voice control set-up, which allows you to act most of the car’s tech by speaking with it in a very natural way.

What’s it like to drive?
While the four-cylinder rear-wheel drive E 220 d turbodiesel and E 300 turbocharged petrol might bring the E-class Coupe in reach of those on lower budgets – and company car schemes – they feel a little underpowered for a grandiose four-seat coupe wearing a premium badge.
The E 450 appeals more with silky-smooth performance and comes exclusively with 4Matic four-wheel drive. In reality, all are quiet and refined, and suited more to motorway driving that B-road thrashing, although the latest model’s body control in tight corners is surprisingly impressive for a coupe of this size.

What models and trims are available?
All cars are offered in desirable AMG Line Premium and Night Edition Premium Plus specifications, adding sporty body styling, 19-inch alloy wheels and useful extras including a reversing camera as standard.
Advanced driver-assistance systems – which include the capability to bring the car to a stop in traffic, move off again, and steer for short periods – are also available.
Mercedes has logically bundled many of these features together in attractive options packages, strongly incentivising owners to spend thousands of pounds extra to create their perfect specification.
Over the next few pages we’ll be scoring the E-Class Coupe in 10 key areas to give it a score out of five. They’ll take into account the driving experience, how pleasant the interior is, the practicality on offer and what it’ll cost you.
