Written by Debbie Wood Published: 6 January 2016

If you value performance and a sleek design over practicality when picking your next company car, a coupe could be just what you’re looking for. The good news is that they don’t have to cost the earth in tax or running costs either.

Here we’ve picked five of our top-rated coupes, plus the engine and trim ideal for company car drivers and the key figures you need to know.

Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe

All-new for 2016, this next-generation C-Class Coupe sports a lightweight and aerodynamic body packed with new safety kit and a range of powerful and efficient engines.

It’s longer and wider than the four-door saloon with a 15mm lower ride height promising a sportier drive behind the wheel.

Likely to be a popular choice with company car drivers will be the four-cylinder 2.1-litre diesel engine with 168bhp and 500Nm of torque, capable of accelerating the car from 0-62mph in 7.8 seconds while still achieving a combined fuel economy of 69mpg and CO2 emissions of 106g/km.

There are two trims to choose from; entry-level Sport comes with plenty of useful kit as standard including an automatic boot release, heated front seats, sat-nav, Bluetooth, automatic climate control, reversing camera, a collision prevention system, 17-inch alloys, cruise control, LED lights and DAB radio.

VW Scirocco

The smallest in our list, the Volkswagen Scirocco has long been a popular choice with retail buyers and company car drivers alike.

Its sporty looks are just half the story though – based on the Golf hatchback, it’s no surprise that the Scirocco’s handling is a highlight too.

Striking the right balance between running costs and power, the lower-powered 2-litre diesel option offers 147bhp and 340Nm of torque, accelerating the car from 0-62mph in 8.3 seconds.

There’s a variety of trim choices available, but we’re particular fans of the sportier features available in GT trim including 18-inch alloys, sports seats and tinted glass. You also get front and rear parking sensors, sat-nav, Bluetooth and dual-zone air-con as standard.

BMW 4 Series Coupe

Known in a previous life as the 3 Series Coupe, the new BMW 4 Series range was introduced in 2013 as a direct replacement and the Coupe was the first model to be launched followed shortly by the Convertible and a larger, more luxurious Gran Coupe.

Although the name is new, it’s really just a 3 Series underneath, sharing its basic chassis, engines and gearbox combinations. Excellent to drive both on the motorway and on your favourite country lane, we’d opt for the 187bhp 420d mated to the firm’s excellent eight-speed automatic gearbox for low running costs.

Entry-level SE trim comes with plenty of kit as standard including sat-nav, heated seats, automatic air-con, xenon headlights, parking sensors and cruise control.

Audi A5 Coupe

Despite its age, we think the Audi A5 is one of the best-looking coupes you can buy. Couple that with the firm’s famed interior quality and a range of advanced kit and the A5 offers a very compelling package indeed.

A new range of diesel engines labelled ‘Ultra’ keep running costs low. The 2-litre TDI diesel we’ve chosen here offers an official combined consumption figure of 74.3mpg and CO2 emissions down at 109g/km with a 0-62mph time of 8.3 seconds courtesy of its 161bhp and 400Nm of pulling power.

You’ve got a choice of three trims – we’d opt for entry-level SE which bags you 17-inch alloy wheels, three-zone air-con, automatic lights and wipers, cruise control, parking sensors, DAB radio, Bluetooth and an automatic boot opening as standard.

Range Rover Evoque

Launched in 2011, the Range Rover Evoque quickly established itself as the firm’s best-selling model.

Available in a three-door coupe bodystyle with an SUV’s raised ride height, Range Rover is renowned for its interior luxury and off-road ability, but to keep running costs low you’ll need to opt for a two-wheel drive model.

Here we’ve chosen the eD4 E-CAPABILITY in SE Tech trim which has a 2-litre diesel with 148bhp under the bonnet emitting 109g/km of CO2 and offering an impressive 67mpg combined. It’s the slowest in our list here though, completing the 0-62mph sprint in 10.6 seconds.

Standard kit in SE Tech trim includes an automatic tailgate, interior mood lighting, keyless start, electronic memory seats, climate control, lane departure warning, front and rear parking sensors and an advanced eight-inch touchscreen multimedia system.
