My 1.8 2004 astra road tax will increase by £90 ( thats over 50 per cent ) in 2009.
I bought the car over 4yrs ago and it was classed as a friendly family car but now with the planned increase dealers are offering me peanuts for it saying that it will be a car hard to retail due to its high road fund group for that type of car. If it was a merc buyers wouldn't mind. I had been looking to trade in for a greener car but now cannot afford to as I still owe more than its worth.

Snce the demise of the smoker, the Government needs to make its money back on the tax it once relished from the sale of cigarettes. Who else can the government hit? The motorist! An easy target and driving a necessity that most need in todays society. The Government isn't interested in being Green, but in raising taxes.

I bought a volvo S60se D5 (2.4 163bhp version) in 2006 because I'd heard about their legendry return in mpg.
I am currently getting 56mpg on a run so its hardly a "gas guzzler" and with emissions at 170 it is currently in band D I think this is a pretty good purchase for a big comfortable family car.
So why, when nothing has changed to the car, must the government raise the emission band to E and consequently the cost of the road tax. It's just another example of the government fleecing motorist

I have a large family of 7 and drive an aging mpv. We do about 7000 mile pa. I have no choice of vehicle, will be paying over 400 pa for car tax. It's a bit rough really, and we operate on a tight budget so are concerned, though there is little we can do!

HOW IS IT FAIR, I OWN A SPORTY CAR I DO LESS THAN 4000 MILES A YEAR AND MY CAR TAX IS SKY HIGH, BUT JO BLOGS WHO HAS A SO CALLED GREEN CAR COULD DO 100,000 MILES A YEAR PLUS BUT PAY LESS CAR TAX THAN ME. DO AWAY WITH CAR TAX AND PUT IT ON THE PRICE OF THE FUEL THEN THAT WAY EVERYBODY THEN PAYS FOR WHAT THEY USE. ITS THE ONLY FAIR WAY OF DOING IT.
IT REALLY IS THAT SIMPLE
