Road Fund Tax is an ownership tax. Pollution is only caused when fuel is burnt thus a small car doing lots of miles may produce more pollution than a large car doing very few. Ideally, all tax would be on fuel thus proportionally taxing those who use more. A means of giving relief to key users would be necessary asand a means of ensuring that a vehicle is insured and MOT'd would be required. Those with very green cars could be given a rebate via insurance premiums thus encouraging insurance too.

So ... one-in-three drivers will pay less for road tax when the new rules come into force next year, with 39% paying the same and 43% of car owners losing out.

... hang about, 33% pay less, 39% pay the same and 43% pay more? That's 115% of drivers. Something doesn't add up, I'm confused

Hi could you make it as easy to find out what the new road tax is on vans as you have done with cars I have a 2003 transit 2000 mini bus and a 1996 LDV pilot thanks

I bought a 3.2 2001 CLK knowing that it was younger than the 2003 cut off point for higher tax was 2003. Then they changed it. So it will cost me £200 a year more next year and £250 more after that. I get 30MPG on the computer the way I use it so how fair is that! Also its not the tax increase that will hurt most people it will be teh depreciation. Looking at prices I will have taken an extra 20% hit. Anyone with a Rover 75 2.5L worth say £3k will never sell it now! You watch.

Brain dead gordon! How on earth does this work?If like me you own a 2001 car in a high band thanks to this "green" tax it has been made worthless and is impossible to sell therefore i`m stuck with it and i paid £3600 in jan its now worth £2300 but in the real world £1800 so have bought a pre 2001 car ready to sorn the post 2001.so i`ll drive the pre2001 as it costs £200 a year to tax but it polutes more weres the "GREEN" in that MR BROWN?????This government should be removed as they have no idea!

A timely sensible warning from Parkers. updated now with relevant facts. Exposes yet a further instance of Brown's smoke-and-mirrors stealth taxation.
Why has it taken so long for the British public to wake up to what's going on?

"Green" everything is a big CON and we are all falling for it.
Facts:
1. A big polluting car (or as the government think normal car) only pollutes when I physically drive it.
2. Road tax is payable everyday you own the car, whether in use or not.
3. We are possibly the only country in Europe that pays road tax - others use petrol as the vehicle for collection, pay as you drive according to fuel consumption.
4. The police will be ran ragged in chasing non-payers, ANPR shares will be huge.

Where is the fairness in these new VED tax rules? If you have an old car you can pollute as much as you like for a fixed price. Makes a total mockery of it being a green tax - the truth is it's just a con! Let's revolt and refuse to pay - the French would never stand for the cr*p Gordon Brown and his cronies are handing out!

YIPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE, labour loses a safe seat in the east of Glasgow biolection. The people of this country are sick of Gordon Brown and his HOODS screwing us left right and centre, they are not listening to the very people who voted for them, with there retrospective policies,(VED)& (FUEL COSTS) only to mention two of there Boo Boos. Gordon, the voices of the people will echo all over the country, WE HAVE HAD ENOUGH. Gordon, you will last about as long as a snow flake in summer.

Road tax is and always will be a con, it's highly unfair to tax someone because of how poluting a vehicle could be. I'd happily comute in a little econobox if I could enjoy a weekend car but for that I'd be looking at paying £400 a year to drive a few hundred miles a year. Road tax should be the same accross the board, we pay for a vehicle lack of greenness at the pumps. Don't forget too that we get taxed twice on fuel, duty at a per litre rate then plus 17.5% VAT. VAT capped on fuel or scrapped

At last the government is doing the right thing - 'the poor motorist' is a contradiction in terms! Driving is a luxery, not a right. Many people in the world do without a car. Small cars can be just as effective family vehicles - heard of a roof rack or trailer for the family hols?! Failing that, rent a large car for a family holiday, you'll save loads by driving something small and green for the rest of the year! Wake up britain and stop moaning about everything! Wheres the blitz spirit?

So the government have scrapped the 2p fuel rise, do they think that the average motorist will think that we do have a careing government, who really cares for the hard working people of this country. I think not.
They know that the Farce of the road tax rise they are about to bring in will screw the motorist 10 times as much than a pissy wee 2p a litre cut, this U turn is really a Wolf in Sheeps clothing, or Calm us before the Storm, don't be fooled this Govenment is bad news. Brown get out.

It's great that I could save all of £25 for being in tax band D, only problem is my car was registered before 2001, meaning I will soon be paying £50 than before these changes.
It is kinda unfair that I am punished for having an engine size larger than 1.5L - since mine is diesel most are over 1.5, apart from say smaller modern diesels that were built after 2001 anyway.

Gordon's 'green' tax suggests that selling my 54 plater to someone who can afford the tax rises then having a whole new, slightly more efficient car built in a hugely CO2 producing process is somehow environmentally friendly.

What he fails to see is that if I'm forced to sell my 350Z, I'll be replacing it with an equally dirty pre-2001 sportscar.

What's Gordon the Moron going to do next? He'll be looking for a new job when the public has its say.

A desperate move from a desperate government with no scientific basis. If they were truly taxing us to save the environment then they should abolish car tax, and (much as I hate to say it) put the tax onto fuel prices. Car tax makes absolutely no allowance for annual mileage so even though I drive about 6000 miles a year in a petrol car I will be taxed about 3 times more than a colleague who does in excess of 24000 miles per year in a diesel. Am I doing more harm to the planet? Absolutely not.

How disgusting this is! why backdate this road tax? Why not just say that from now on cars in the top band will pay more, give people a years notice to get sorted then implement it on new cars only, this is outrageous. You simply cannot hike up prices this way, us the British public will not let it happen. This is one step to far for me i already pay thousand a year in fuel duty, what more do they want from me.

I'm afraid the government has pressed the self-destruct button on this one. This is a real vote loser for them, the motorist is clobbered enough. If it was a "green tax" as they put it, the cost would be on fuel so those that burn the most, pay the most, SIMPLE! However the road tax is going to cost me £430 in 2010 regardless of if I do 100 miles a year or 100,000. I've voted Labour all my life and was so proud when they got in and ousted the Conservatives, however,Labour will get my vote no more

We do not have a government but a dictatorship, introducing a retrospective tax (as a cynical tax to cover the massive financial blunders perpetrated by Brown) and then lie to the public about the extra financial hardship that will be placed on the majority of families, especially those who have larger cars to transport children. The whole idea of taxing people after the event is appalling and wrong. It begs the question what will Labour do next????
