BMW can rightly claim to have begun the trend towards large 4x4s that weren't meant for frequent forays into the wilderness, but rather feel like a modern car on the road. The new X5 is much improved - faster, roomier, less thirsty and more agile.

This is the leftfield and cheaper choice to a BMW X5, Range Rover or Mercedes-Benz M-Class. It's Volvo's first proper 4x4 and has one trick that its rivals lack: seven-seater practicality.

Terracan is proof that the macho 4x4 still exists, and if you need a workhorse rather than fashion accessory, it fits the bill. It's cheap to buy, stacked with kit and quite capable in the rough stuff.

Rexton falls between the compact and large SUV categories. It offers interior space, and up to seven seats on some models, for the price of a RAV4 or X-trail, appealing to customers looking for a bargain, or those new to the 4x4 market.

M-Class is Mercedes-Benz back at its best. The styling is understated and elegant, the interior is comfortable and attractive, and it drives well - both on and off road; the whole package oozes subtle sophistication.

The Grand Cherokee is America's answer to the Range Rover. It is also surprisingly good on the road and comes generously equipped. The automatic 2.7-litre CRD is the greenest model in the range.
