Should you buy one?

Yes, you should. Owning a Porsche Macan will be a special thing for most buyers, such is its breadth of its talent. If you want to take it on a track, it’ll entertain and if you want to take it off the beaten path, it’ll get you further than a lot of other cars of this type. But for most it’ll remain on road which is where it’s especially talented.

As a family car it’s slightly more compromised as it’s not huge in the rear. And Porsche’s been traditionally stingy with base models, giving them not only a rather unpleasant four-cylinder engine but, as ever, almost zero equipment unless you peruse the pricey options list.

The majority of Macan buyers would be best served by the mid-range ‘S’. While not quite as quick as the GTS, it’s usefully cheaper, all while being more entertaining than the standard and ‘T’ models.

What we like

There are only four versions to choose from and each serves a purpose. No matter which version you choose, the handling is sharp and it will be fun to drive, while quality throughout is good too.

What we don’t like

The base model cars can be quite dour. Not only in terms of out-and-out pace, but with the interior and the noise it makes too.
