Ford has confirmed a £190 million commitment to build its next-generation 2-litre turbo-diesel engines at the Dagenham plant in London. A source at Ford has indicated the engine will be featuring in the Transit Custom, and possibly the Transit 2t.
NOx emissions have been dramatically reduced to help the engine achieve Euro-6, and therefore satisfying the air quality requirements of the London Mayor’s proposed Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ).
The new engines are thought to be an independent venture by Ford unlike the current 2.2-litre, which is a joint venture with PSA and also feature in the Peugeot Boxer and Citroen Relay. It’s expected the new engine will replace the current 2.2-litre engine when deadline for Euro-6 vehicles comes into force in September 2016.
“Ford is delighted to announce this next phase of investment at Dagenham. The overall investment of over £475 million, supported by the UK Government, underlines Ford’s commitment to the UK”, explained Stephen Odell, Ford executive vice president, Europe, Middle East & Africa.
“This all-new, state-of-the-art, low carbon diesel engine has not only been designed and developed here it will be manufactured by Ford in the UK too. And it will be great for UK plc as these engines will be exported to markets around the world”.
