Other Alfa Romeo 156 (1997 - 2005) models:

  • Summary

What does this car say about you?

The stereotypical Alfa reliability image means many stay away, which keeps prices at rock bottom for the rest of us. Most drivers really don't know what they're missing.

What do your friends / family / neighbours think of the car?

Everyone likes the 156 - and like it even more once they've been for a spin in it. The 156 is becoming a relatively rare sight now, with the remaining ones usually being well-maintained.

Would you buy this car again and why?

Yes, undoubtedly. The tming belt change intervals are pricey, and it's an uphill battle to keep on top of rust issues, but the car has so much character that none of it matters.

What are you likely to buy next?

Another 156, maybe the Giugiaro facelift, or a GT. If the budget would stretch to a 159 TBi, I might give it a go - but the current Alfa range seems incredibly dull.

  • Driving it

    What's it like to drive?

The best FWD car I've ever driven. Sharp, weighty steering combined with a rev-happy Twin Spark engine and reasonably long gear ratios. The 0-60 sprint is deceptively quick, and needs only two gears to achieve. It could do with a 6th gear for crusing speeds though, with the car doing 75mph at about 3,500rpm in 5th..

    What's it like to park?

The quick stering rack - just two turns from lock to lock - has compromised the turning circle, so it takes a bit longer to get used to parking the 156. Visibility is good from all angles though, and my rear spoiler lets me know where the end of the bootlid is! The oval wing mirrors look nice, but can leave bigger blind-spots than usual. Once again, easy to get used to.

  • Living with it

Have you had any problems with the car?

Front wishbones were immediately replaced when I bought the car. Rocker cover gasket started leaking - spurious parts are a bad fit.

What's most practical about your car?

It's got a decent boot and space for 4 adults to sit in comfort. What's not to like?

    Favourite gadget, option or accessory?

The outside temperature reading that comes with the aircon option is generally spot-on.
