Alfa Romeo 156 Saloon 2.0 Veloce 4d Selespeed (LT) (2000/W) Owner Review

Economy
Value
Poor value when new, due to high depreciation. However, a good bet second-hand with good spec and prices 30 to 40% lower than their equivalent German rivals.
Costs
Average running costs for type of car - although fuel economy is disappointing when driven hard.

On the road
Driving
Nice drive for short periods of time. Motorway cruising can become tiresome and the ride a little firm. Selespeed gearbox takes away some of the driving pleasure.
Performance
Excellent performace from 2.0TS engine. Best when pushed and quite torquey also for a 2 litre petrol. Selespeed gearbox can make sluggish gearchanges.

Living with it
Reliability
New engine at 50k miles, although this was not a generic problem. The wrong oil filter was fitted starving the engine of oil. Otherwise, quite acceptable.
Image
Not a Mercedes. However, has more appeal and style than a 3-Series and receives more comments from others.
Comfort
Driving position good and leather seats very supportive. Nice fresh feel from inside the cabin.
