There are just two petrol engines available – the entry-level unit was initially a 2.0-litre twin spark unit with 150bhp but in July 2003 this was replaced by a more powerful 2.0-litre JTS engine with 165bhp which gave the GTV a 0-60mph time of 8.1 seconds. The other choices is the wonderful 3.0-litre V6 – a mainstay of the Alfa Romeo range. This was replaced in 2003 by a larger 3.2-litre engine and power increased by 20bhp to 240bhp while the 0-60mph time dropped from 6.5 seconds to just 6.1 seconds.

The V6 sounds wonderful and provides great pace but is incredibly thirsty, averaging just 21mpg

The GTV corners sharply with precise and well-weighted steering but as it’s front wheel drive the 3.2-litre engine can overwhelm the front tyres and wheelspin is common, while pushing hard will cause the front to lose traction. Grip is good though and body roll is minimal, making the Alfa an enjoyable and rewarding car to drive.
