The A1 borrows its platform from the Volkswagen Polo, so it’s no surprise that it achieved the full five stars in the Euro NCAP safety tests, performing particularly well for adult protection and safety assist. Audi A1 safety is helped by the inclusion of six airbags and an e-diff that maximises traction out of a corner. A secondary collision brake assist system was added in 2015 to reduce the risks of skidding and additional collisions during an accident.

The Audi scores yet more points over its obvious MINI alternative by offering a boot that’s almost 70% bigger but it’s a four-seat model only. This might limit its appeal for some who might need to occasionally carry three kids.
