Although this cabriolet version of the A3 has not been Euro NCAP crash tested, the hatchback was awarded four stars and the Cabriolet is expected to perform similarly. Standard safety equipment includes dual front and side airbags, an electronic stability programme with electronic brakeforce distribution to help stop the car quickly and safely, roll-over bars and Isofix child seat anchor points in the front and back.

All cars get remote central locking and an alarm.

The A3 Cabriolet’s quick-closing fabric roof means that you’re unlikely to be caught out by a sudden shower. Whereas cars with metal folding versions – like the Renault Megane CC and VW Eos – open in 22 seconds, the A3 Cabriolet’s opens in nine seconds and closes in 11. Even its nearest rival – the BMW 1-Series Convertible which also has a soft top – can only do it in 22 seconds.

The roof on the A3 Cabriolet folds back on itself in a Z-shape so the top of the roof doubles-up as the tonneau cover when it’s folded flat. It also sits on top of the boot, rather than inside it, which frees up space. Just as well, as the boot is an exceptionally odd shape: despite the look of the rear, there’s no real ‘hatch’ opening – it’s more of a porthole (see gallery for an example).

As a result you almost have to get inside the boot to reach items at the back. That said, the boot is a decent size and the seats can be folded down to accommodate larger and more awkward items.
