Economy
Value
You get a very high standard specification. An expensive used buy compared to some of the competition.
Costs
Increased with the mileage - Servicing is pricey, even at specialists.
-
On the road
Driving
A reassuring drive - But no real driver involvement. Steering lacks feel.
Performance
Good top end performance, mid -range could be better. My car seeing over 150mph on the autobahn.

Living with it
Reliability
Variable - Much due to high mileage. These cars are NOT permanent 4-wheel drive and my 'Haldex' unit (transfer box) failed. The car was still useable-Minus Quattro!
Image
Divided between younger 'petrol heads' who love it and others who see a body-kitted, old shape A3.Subtle performance, depending on the colour you choose!
Comfort
A very comfortable driving environment, great tactile surfaces and quality switchgear. BMW cannot compete at 3 Series level.

Security and Service
Security
Never had any problems - Not an obvious target.
Service
Expensive for a Golf-based car. Buy and service from a good independent specialist.

Problems and Ownership
Problems

Other
Electrical parts - Brake light assembly fails and clutch slave cylinder broke. Both repaired by main dealer.
