Audi A3 Hatchback (2012-2018) interior, tech and comfort
- Modern, upmarket interior
- Clever features downgraded on later models
- But quality remains consistent
The cabin is driver-focused and is well laid out. The switchgear feels solid and well made while the plastics on the dash are soft to touch. The chrome inserts brighten the cabin too. Although the A3 is a small car, a lot of effort has been made in keeping a feeling of space and cramming in luxury technology, such as the infotainment system that retracts into the dashboard.
The motorised screen was discontinued on later models, but a virtual cockpit and software improvements mean the fixed screen feels at home with the overall level of technology.
If you have electric front seats then it’s easy to get a good driving position, but if you only have manual front seats then sliding the chair into the correct position can be a bit of a faff.
The A3 Mk3 is a good upgrade for owners of the previous generation – a 23mm longer wheelbase means the 2012-2018 A3 feels much bigger than the older version, and the interior is brighter thanks to the chrome inserts making the cabin a lot more pleasant.
Comfort
- Supple ride on most models
- S-line can feel a bit harsh
- Good noise insulation for overall refinement
Audi A3 comfort levels are excellent. The ride is good too: it’s supple over all surfaces and particularly smooth when cruising on motorways. The front seats are well bolstered and the side supports are of a decent size giving good support when cornering enthusiastically. Road, wind and tyre noise are minimal because the cabin has been well insulated.
