Audi kept the A3 virtually identical to the previous generation in terms of length but a longer wheelbase means passengers get more legroom in the rear of the car. The shallow, gently curved dashboard creates a roomy feel up front, particularly on earlier models where the navigation/infotainment display can be hidden when not required.

There are plenty of cubbies to hide loose change from view while the door pockets are of a good size as is the glove box. All-round visibility is good but parking sensors are a common option, easily found on used models if you want added peace of mind when reversing.

Boot space increased by 15 litres over the previous generation, to 365 litres when you have the seats in place. Fold the split-folding rear seats flat and the load space increases to 1,100 litres. If you need mroe space, the A3 Sportback is a better option.

The Audi A3 received five stars when tested by Euro NCAP in 2012. Standards have changed, but it scored highly in every area and as long as the car you are considering is in good condition you should be confident in its safety.
