Overview

The Audi S4 sits between the regular A4 models and the mighty RS4 Avant range-topper, delivering great performance while also offering vaguely real-world running costs (Audi claims nearly 35mpg average fuel economy).

However, you’ll be lucky to see that figure as the S4’s supercharged 333bhp 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine endows it with strong performance – enough for 0-62mph in around five seconds thanks to the standard seven-speed S tronic automatic gearbox (which you can control via steering wheel paddles).

Available as a saloon or an Avant estate, the four-wheel drive S4 is up against alternatives such as the BMW 335i and Vauxhall Insignia VXR in the performance stakes. As an all-rounder it’s the best and boasts levels of roominess, interior luxury and pace that the others cannot compete with.

But it doesn’t quite beat the 335i for sheer exhilaration because it can feel a little too cosy and relaxed to really set the pulse racing.

S4 equipment

The Audi S4 is priced at a whisker over £39,000, which is competitive when you consider the engineering, performance and equipment offered.

To distinguish it from regular A4 models, the S4 comes with 18-inch alloy wheels, a bodykit, matt grey grille, painted brake callipers and quad exhaust pipes, while inside are leather/Alcantara sports seats, aluminium trim and discreet ‘S’ badges on the steering wheel and instruments.

A Black Edition model is also offered, priced at £40,095. As with other Audi models, the Black Edition treatment brings 19-inch alloy wheels in a titanium grey finish, a black radiator grille, black fog light and window surrounds. Basically, anything that is bright silver on the S4 exterior is painted black.

Black Edition models also gain extra equipment including parking sensors front and rear, automatic headlights and wipers, upgraded Bang & Olufsen music system and piano black interior trim inlays.

Practical performance

One of the key attributes of the S4 range is the fact it is offered as a spacious estate. The Avant model boasts 490 litres of luggage space (increasing to 1,430 litres if you fold the rear seats down).
