Audi A4 Saloon 1.8 SE 4d (1999/T) Owner Review

Economy
Value
Much cheaper than a BMW or Mercedes, but with comparing quality and refinement.
Costs
Dealer servicing is pricey compared to a VW Passat, which is almost identical mechanically. Seek VAG independant specialists as they are cheaper.

On the road
Driving
Very smooth, refined and quiet. Steering is positive and body roll is minimal.
Performance
Has to be worked hard as performance low revs is lacking (but it likes to rev highly). It also revs highly on the motorway which affects economy.

Living with it
Reliability
Built like a tank, but with excellent reliability, even for a young person like me who lacks the respect it deserves.
Image
BMWs are becoming less desirable due to popularity. People are seeking something as good but different. Audi is it.
Comfort
Extremelly comfortable as expected from a German brand. 10x more comfortable than a C-Class. However, rear space is not great.

Security and Service
Security
The car came with manufacturer alarm and immobiliser, which so far has not had to be tested. The flashing LEDs by the door locks give good indication of security and look good at night.
Service
I was experiencing a crunching noise, which I took to the main dealer to investigate. They looked for free and then I went elsewhere after receiving a quote!
