Audi A4 Saloon 2.8 quattro 4d (1999/S) Owner Review

Economy
Value
Owned 3 years. Not cheap, but depreciated much less than a Mondeo/Vectra/406.
Costs
Cheap to service - 10k miles just over £100, 20k from £200 - 300. Tyres common size and last well.

On the road
Driving
Great in the wet, but heavy front will understeer when pushed. Very stable, very useable.
Performance
For the money, you'll struggle to find a quality saloon to beat it, especially if you want 4wd. (Drive a 3-series in the snow and tell me you don't!)

Living with it
Reliability
A few small problems in the first 20k, but all sorted under warranty; now 60k and solid as a rock. Vorsprung Durch Technik and all that.
Image
Looking its age a little now? I still love the look. Not too flash, not too ordinary either. Better image than a Mondeo, but cost me less to run over the 3 years. I'm happy!
Comfort
The interior's a nice place to be, reassuringly solid. Even the switches feel good. Seats could be a little more supportive for my liking, though.

Security and Service
Security
Alarm/immobiliser and all that. It's still here, so must be ok!
Service
Audi and my dealer (Autohaus, Northampton) first class.
