Audi A4 Saloon (1995-2001) running costs and reliability

Audi servicing helps keep values firm, but it’s expensive. It’s worth finding a good independent specialist but if you buy an older A4 but be warned that parts prices are higher than average.
With a host of V6 engines and a relatively small choice of diesels, it’s no surprise that the first generation A4 is a polluting model. The V6 and S4 models are the worst offenders. The latter emits 274g/km of CO2 and averages just 24mpg. The best choice for economy is the 1.9-litre TDI engine – the 110bhp version is the cleanest, emitting 142g/km of CO2.
There are no major worries with the A4, although there was a recall for cambelt in 1996 so it’s worth checking that the replacement work has been done. There were also reports of some electrical problems and as you’d expect most cars have covered pretty big mileages. The A4 can take it but it helps if the car has been serviced properly. TDI models will take even bigger distances in their stride, but again need to be maintained correctly.
