Audi A5 Cabriolet (2009-2017) verdict
Should you buy a used Audi A5 Cabriolet Mk1?
Yes. If a convertible car appeals to you then it’s difficult to find anything better and more consistently affordable to run. Rather than avoiding a bad car, you’ll be looking for sticking points on how the car fits your lifestyle. If you want more boot space, the BMW 3-Series (and other folding hardtops like the Volvo C70 or Ford Focus CC) can provide when the roof is up – but you’ll lose it when it folds. If you want something smaller to park, then the Audi A3 Cabriolet might fit the bill but there’s very little advantage, and a big disadvantage in terms of space.
It’s already one of the most economical and safe options you’ll find at this age and budget.
It’s so accomplished, we’d suggest it’s worth spending more and getting the perfect spec and condition, rather than just buying the best value or cheapest you find.
What we like:
Refinement with roof up or down, low running costs of four-cylinder models, security of quattro all-wheel drive, and general practicality and versatility. It looks good, too.
What we don’t like:
Diesels and convertibles still seem like an odd mix, but most will have diesel power. They’re refined enough when well maintained but be careful buying older, higher-mileage examples.
