Driving it
What's it like to drive?
There's a lot more steering feel than on my previous 2004 A3. As expected, the ride on the Back Edition is quite firm with its stiffened suspension and 19" wheels and I preferred the softer ride of the SE model I tried, but it was a Black Edition model I wanted for the equipment and I'll put up with the suspension firmness. The new 1.8 engine is an absoilute joy. Its got as much torque as my old A3 2.0 TDI diesel so it pulls really well and the 0-62 time of 7.9 seconds is as fast as anyone really needs on the road these days. I took a gamble ordering the engine before it was available to test, but its been a great decision. Although the car's still loosening up, it averaged over 35mpg over the last tankful of fuel.
What's it like to park?
Given its size and the slight compromise to the view out from of the coupe bodyshell and the privacy glass, parking is straightforward, with great support from the parking sensors with screen display.
