How much is it going to cost to run?

The A5 is surprisingly light on your wallet or purse thanks to being offered with a surpremely efficient range of petrol and diesel models. The all-wheel drive 252hp 45 TFSI petrol returns up more than 40mpg in real world driving, while even the V6 diesel S5 performance model should score more than 35mpg with care.

The diesels have the best fuel consumption in the range, delivering between 50 and 60mpg in real-world driving, with low CO2 emissions to match. Audi servicing costs aren’t the cheapest, but with infrequent services needed up to 19,000 miles or two years, you shouldn’t end up spending much keeping an A5 well serviced.

The A5 is quite green for a sporting coupe with low emissions for the performance on offer. The Quattro all-wheel drive system increases fuel consumption on 2.0-litre diesel models, with a small emissions penalty. The automatic gearbox, meanwhile, shaves a few grams off the CO2 figure in most cases.

Servicing and maintenance

You’ll find Audi’s servicing and maintenance costs on par with its premium rivals – in other words, fairly expensive, but with high levels of customer satisfaction.

Audi’s standard warranty, at three years or 60,000 miles is stingy compared with others. Especially BMW’s, which is three years and unlimited mileage. But you can extend the warranty to four years/75,000 miles or five years/90,000 miles for extra money.

Reliability

  • Fit and finish is excellent
  • Longevity of technology still an unknown
  • Most engines proven to be reliable

This is an important car for Audi, so you can be sure it’s been designed and built to the highest order. It also shares a lot of kit with other vehicles in the Volkswagen Group, from drivetrains to interior components, so you can buy with confidence.

As with the A4, our only concern would be surrounding the Virtual Cockpit system and some of the electrics, which proved problematic in some early Audi TT models.

The Audi RS5 uses a mixture of Porsche and Audi running gear. There’s no reason to believe it will be less reliable than other models of A5, but it may be less tolerant of neglect. As a high performance model, expect it to be more expensive for consumables such as brake pads, discs and tyres.
