Audi E-Tron GT boot space, practicality and safety

2021 onwards (change model)
Practicality rating: 3 out of 53.0

  • Rear head and legroom is disappointing
  • Small boot, but there’s extra space under the bonnet
  • No plans for an Avant model

How much space is there?

The Audi E-Tron GT is a low-slung performance car, but even considering that you may be slightly disappointed by the amount of space for people inside. Up front, the driver and passenger have plenty of room, but in the back headroom and legroom is tight, and we can’t imagine three adults ever being comfortable despite the trio of seatbelts. It’s no surprise the Porsche Taycan comes as standard with four seats, not five.

The door openings are surprisingly tight as well. But at least versions of the facelifted model with active air suspension – it’s standard on Vorsprung trim – include a neat suspension trick that raises the car by up to 77mm as soon as you open a door. Given how low slung the e-tron GT is, it makes it much easier to get in and out.

Even shorter adults will feel cramped back here.

You’ll find similarly compact interior dimensions in the Taycan (as well as the same rising suspension). If you want a more spacious electric saloon, the Tesla Model S is more generous, and you can choose from a selection of Mercedes and BMW models that also offer extra room. They aren’t as overtly sporty, though.

Boot space and storage

There are two boots. One in the front under the bonnet, which at 81 litres is big enough for a squashy overnight bag (or the charging cables), plus the main luggage compartment in the rear. All of the 2024-onwards models are restricted to just 350 litres back there, though the original E-Tron GT Quattro available previously had 405 litres.

Either way, this is not a big space for this size of car. An issue compounded by the small opening and awkward shape. You will need to pack carefully, especially if you’re travelling with four or five people on board.

With the rear boot so small, it’s handy you can stick the charging cables here.

Is it easy to park?

At a glance, the E-Tron GT’s dramatic looks may disguise its voluptuous proportions. But it’s actually five metres long and two metres wide – before you’ve even accounted for the door mirrors. Forward visibility is fine, but the view through the rear window is like looking through a letter box at a distance.

It can be a tight fit in a UK parking space, and though getting it in there shouldn’t be too difficult, since every model comes loaded with cameras and sensors, opening the door and getting out may be another matter. Fortunately, the 2024 update also introduces a Remote Parking feature – which allows you to get out first, then use the myAudi smart phone app to control the car parking itself for you. Neat.

Safety

  • No Euro NCAP crash-test rating
  • Plenty of driver assistance available
  • Much improved standard equipment for facelift

Euro NCAP has not tested the Audi e-Tron GT – though the Porsche Taycan that it shares a platform and technology with did receive a five-star rating in 2019.

Lots of airbags and electronic safety nets as standard.

The list of standard assistance systems for the pre-facelift model was surprisingly limited for such a premium car. But the 2024-onwards version comes with extras including adaptive cruise control and active lane assist on all versions, as well as traffic sign recognition, autonomous emergency braking and the now mandatory speed limit exceeded warning system. The alarm for this last feature is relatively subtle.

Many versions also come with Audi’s powerful laser lights in addition to the standard matrix LED headlights, extending the range of the main beam, while top-spec Vorsprung cars include night vision via the infotainment for improved visibility as well.

Powerful brakes and all-wheel drive feature across the range, with all-wheel steering and two further levels of brake upgrade also available. In fact, the limits of traction, grip and braking performance are so high, you’re unlikely to get near them on the road, even in the entry-level S e-tron GT. You’ll find Isofix mounts on the outer rear seats that are easy to reveal and clip a child seat to, and there’s enough space to ensure the front passenger still has decent legroom.
