Along with the chassis, the windscreen pillars have been strengthened to improve crash protection and electronic stability control (ESP) is standard. All models come with two front airbags, plus head and side airbags along with side impact protection and reinforced side sills.

Practicality isn’t top of the list of priorities given it is a two-seater convertible but the TT roadster is still more practical than its predecessor, especially thanks to a longer boot. The luggage area isn’t very tall but will accommodate two big suitcase and an overnight bag – there’s also a host of cubbyholes including one behind each of the seats.

Roof-down driving is a comfortable experience even in cold weather thanks to heated seats and well-placed warming vents but it isn’t as quiet as some other convertibles, especially at motorway speeds. The roof itself folds down in just 12 seconds and can be operated up to speeds of 19mph, useful if you get stuck in a sudden downpour in traffic.
