Bentley Flying Spur boot space, practicality and safety

2019 onwards (change model)
Practicality rating: 3.5 out of 53.5

  • It’s all about the rear seats
  • Luxury for two in the back
  • Boot space isn’t overly generous

How much space is there?

The Bentley Flying Spur is all about the back seats. Although it’s aimed at industry leaders who like to drive themselves, we’ll start at the business end. Firstly, the legroom is generous and the individually-contoured seats are supremely comfortable – and made all the better if you go for the optional drinks chiller to make those journeys float by without a care in the world.

Up front, it’s roomy and the comfortable seats are multi-adjustable, offer heating, cooling and massage function. There are plenty of storage areas to choose from, although there’s no cubbyhole under the well-sized central armrest. Surprising.

Boot space and storage

The boot space is unimpressive, and although we didn’t give it the golf-club test, the overall capacity of 420 litres means it lags significantly behind its rivals. Of course, Bentley would argue that most owners will have their luggage ‘sent on’, this is disappointing – especially considering the Bentayga has such a large boot to play with.

Is it easy to park?

The Bentley Flying Spur is significantly larger than your typical executive-class car, so is going to be troubled by typical garages and parking spaces. However, it’s unlikely to be frequenting too many of those. There’s no disguising its size on the move, but at least it feels agile on the move.

Luckily, it has all of the parking aids you’d ever need, which include parking radar front and rear, as well an excellent 360-degree camera system, which helps get you into those tight spots without too many troubles.

Safety

  • No Euro NCAP score
  • Strong body with stiff structure
  • Lots of driver assistance tech

The Bentley Flying Spur hasn’t been tested by Euro NCAP, but is built around a very strong aluminium body and platform that’s related to the Audi A8, and as such, it comes with the very latest driver assistance technology, so you need not worry should the worst happen.

There’s plenty of good news in terms of active safety systems – it benefits from grip and traction benefits of four-wheel drive, and as we found during testing in some genuinely rotten weather, it feels imperious on the road. There are a multitude of airbags plus two standard and one optional Isofix child seat mount in the rear – and Bentley will happily sell you one of its own matching child seats.

Driver assistance systems include:

Rather disappointingly, the excellent adaptive cruise control system is an optional extra.
