BMW 1-Series Hatchback (2011 - 2019) 116d M Sport 3d Owner Review
Want to know everything there is to know about this car?
In their own words
I was looking for something to replace my elderly but trusty comfy 2005 Golf, and looked at 3 year old Golfs, but despite the obvious appeal, I fancied a change as the new models didn't seem that different to drive or to sit in. The One series, particularly in 3 door form looks purposeful and the styling betrays its practicality as a everyday car - if you don't intend to carry more than 1 passenger, otherwise buy a 5 door. It looks far more sportier (especially in M Sport trim) that any of its rivals and delivers that expected BMW sporting reputation when on the road. The cheap road tax, insurance and running costs makes it painless to own on a day to day level. The torque, despite the lower engine output (116D has the same 2 litre engine as the 118D and 120D) is very effective in mid range. Again, feeling faster than it actually is, the handling is planted - grips the road with no roll. The ergonomics are first class, the interior quality is excellent and its a nice place to be. The M Sport multi-function steering wheel and precise 6 speed gearbox are a joy to use, the idrive system is logical and intuative and the feel and quality of the control switches are great. The equipment list is ok, but has no sat nav, no lane correction, no heated seats and the sound system is BMW basic - adequate but lacking in clarity or bass - extra tweeters and better door speaks would resolve that. Rear parking sensors are very useful as rear visibility is not great. The ride, due to the M Sport suspension and low profile tyres is somewhat firm, so you'll be spending time reading the road to try and avoid holes. It's fine on smooth motorways but unsettling on unmaintained town roads. The worst aspect are the seats, I find it difficult to get comfortable on long journeys - it has no lumber support, but I plan on buying an after-market 'wedge' for the seat. Watch out for tyre replacements too - they'll set you back £180 each. The engine can be surprisingly noisy too, and there is the odd vibration inside the car occasionally - seems to be coming from the rear and door windows - I plan on getting that checked out by the dealer soon. I would consider buying another, perhaps a facelift 120D/220D Sport with a higher spec. Friends seemed to be impressed, despite the relative low pecking order - if I was to remove the 116D badge, you'd struggle to tell it's only a 114bhp car. Buy in a subtle dark colour, the lines seem to suit them better.
How reliable do you find the car?
Buy from a franchised BMW dealer, the 1 years warranty is peace of mind. They check everything on the car and tend to only stock the best examples.Does the car do everything you expected it to do?
I was sold on the RWD aspect, and it doesn't compromise on drivability - the clutch, manual gearbox and steering are superb. The boot is well sized. For a entry level model, it drives and handles very confidently and is as well built as any BMW.About their car
