BMW 3-Series Convertible 325i 2d (2002/51) Owner Review

Economy
Value
Excellent value used, but prices are now creeping up as they become collectable. Cherished insurance on some models keeps cost down.
Costs
Avoid main dealers and shop around for parts - the mechanics are simple and inexpensive. You must buy a good one to ensure there are no hidden scares.

On the road
Driving
Fantastic 6-cylinder performance, but watch out for oversteer.
Performance
Effortless through the range. I would not recommend anything less than the 320i 6-cylinder as the convertible is a substantial weight.

Living with it
Reliability
You MUST buy with FSH and few owners. There are a lot of BMWs out there - many neglected and/or thrashed.
Image
Like its FWD competitor, the Audi, becoming a classic but (because of the age gap) the BMW is a lot less pricey.
Comfort
Scuttle shake virtually nil. Cruises along effortlessly with a firm ride.

Security and Service
Security
Old enough not to attract much problems, but ensure it is fitted with a conspicuous Thatcham 1/2 immobiliser. Be sensible about where you leave it as for any car, especially a convertible.
Service
Avoid the main dealers. Specialists are excellent.

Problems and Ownership
Problems
Engine
Airflow valve occasionally sticks. A common problem cured quickly.
Other
Electric window switches; another common problem that means replacement and is straightforward.
