BMW 3-Series Convertible (2007-2013) running costs and reliability

The prestige of the BMW badge and quality of the product means that the 3 Series Convertible usually has some of the best residuals around. This should be further enhanced with the metal folding roof and sophisticated equipment (such as heat-reflective seats) on this latest car. Insurance and parts and servicing are expensive, but in line with other cars of this kind while the frugal diesels mean running one needn’t be an expensive experience.
The 3 Series Convertible performs reasonably on the eco front and by far the best model is the 320d – this emits 140g/km of CO2 and is capable of 53mpg. Even the top of the range 335i isn’t too bad – averaging 30mpg and emitting 226g/km of CO2, which is impressive considering it’s superb performance.
BMW is renowned for its quality, and this generation of 3 Series Convertible is no exception. For much of its life it proved to be exceptionally reliable with no major problems. The Convertible feels precisely built and there’s good attention to detail throughout the car.
BMW 3 Series Convertible recalls
BMW announced in May 2018 that various petrol- and diesel-engined 3 Series Coupe models would be subjected to a recall relating to an engine cut-out problem caused by an electrical fault.
If a used 3 Series Convertible built between March 2007 and August 2011 is on your shortlist, then it’s important to verify with a BMW dealer that the remedial work has been undertaken.
