Go specialist independent, BMW OK for service but non routine fix quotes are embarrassing.

Exhaust manifold cracked at 90k miles (or earlier) - not fixed because of replacement cost (£450) and welding attempts have failed, thermostat may be stuck open - gauge keeps dropping to cold, whirring noise from front of engine, a bit harsh at high revs.

This car is a nightmare to keep up to scratch. Not a thing on it seems to want to not break, fall off or work badly. Apart from a failed fuel pump (apparently rare) it hasn't actually left me stranded. Suspension bush break-up, interior trim rattles.
