Economy
Value
A lot of money for an old car, but a lot of car...
Costs
Non-geniune parts really aren't that much at all and quite a bit of E36 maintenance is DIY.

On the road
Driving
Rear wheel drive, perfectly balanced. Hugely capable chassis means hooligan and old man equally at home. Just needs a bit more care in the wet than a Mondeo.
Performance
A 'lazy' engine from a standing start, but blistering in-gear acceleration thanks to six cylinder torque. Fabulous for overtaking, but you'll lose out to boy racers in Saxos at the lights.

Living with it
Reliability
Mine has been fairly average, despite full BMW SH, but in general fantasticly reliable mechanically - just a few build quality issues with the early models.
Image
Lowered and with wheels it can still turn heads and scare children. It can look mean, or classy depending what, if anything, you do to it.
Comfort
Superb seats, perfect driving position. Slightly cramped for legroom in rear and a heavy clutch the only minuses.

Security and Service
Security
Not great. Standard alarms and immobilisers are nothing special. Best to get some aftermarket peace of mind.
Service
Had very little to do with main dealers due to the age of vehicle, but BMW dealers are impeccable - but they should be at their price.

Problems and Ownership
Problems
Engine
Prone to overheating problems, but engine is strong as an ox.
Other
Water pumps are notorious for failing, electric windows can be sticky on E36s and they can also let in water occasionally. Not had these with the 320 yet though.
