Economy
Value
Been stung by massive depreciation as bought car 4 years ago.
Costs
On some things, as cheap as a Vectra/Mondeo to run, but on big items, expect big bills. £2k plus in last 3 years!

On the road
Driving
Nothing can match a BMW for poise, driver feedback and all round handling - especially at the limit.
Performance
Excellent. If you're having a BM, only consider a 6 cylinder. The 4s don't compare. Sometimes sluggish around town, but a flyer when you wind them up.

Living with it
Reliability
Had a rear diff problem which BMW paid 50% towards and the immobiliser/central locking brain died. Warranty paid for that. Other than that, excellent.
Image
Beginning to wane now as so many around. Still raises envious eyebrows amongst people with a lot newer cars. Still a prestigious status symbol.
Comfort
You could drive from John O'Groats to Lands End and not feel tired. It's weight gives it a ride quality that puts many a larger cars to shame.

Security and Service
Security
BMW key immobiliser is Thatcham 2, so they'll need to nick the keys if they want it. Add a good Alarm and you should be ok.
Service
BMW are the best dealers out there. They put the others to shame.

Problems and Ownership
Problems
Engine
None - this engines is faultless.
Other
Check the rear diff for whining - it will cost best part of grand to change!
