Newer models are much more efficient and offer better performance from smaller capacity engines. However the build quality or materials of the E46 seems better than later models while the straight six is a very robust engine and very satisfying to drive. It must be maintained to keep operating well and that’s not inexpensive.
How reliable do you find the car?
All the bushings on the front wishbones, waterpump (due to a tiny leak), steering rack (rattling at town speeds) all the shocks (my choice due to age).Does the car do everything you expected it to do?
Car was like new inside and out -13 years old and 25k miles. Auto is super smooth as is the engine. Handling is impressive. Feels very solid and planted. Effortless on a long trip. 28mpg around town, 40 on a long run. Engine is very satisfying when pushed and very responsive between 60 and 90 on the motorway.About their car
