In their own words
So far I'm very pleased with the car. The driving position is excellent for me and the interior feels very well built. I've had an MSport model before but I prefer the suspension of the SE as the ride is much better. The best economy so far is 39mpg on a long run and the average is 33 at the time of writing. It's the first 6 cylinder petrol version I've owned and the car runs very smoothly with plenty of power. The auto gearbox is a little dated compared to more modern cars but is still pleasant to use. Since buying the car I've had to replace the battery, although the car was on the original battery so I think it had lasted pretty well. I've also learned from various forums that these engines can suffer from failures including water pump, coil packs, injectors and fuel pump, so it might be worth considering a BMW warranty to mitigate those risks if, like me, you aren't able to do mechanical work yourself. This car has had one owner from new and a full BMW service history so I'm hoping the more expensive items might have been done, although I appreciate it's a 12 year old car so repairs will no doubt be necessary. In summary, I would recommend these cars but bear in mind they can be expensive to maintain.
