BMW 5-Series Saloon 520i SE 4d Auto (1995/N) Owner Review

Economy
Value
Quite well equipped, has all the things you need and expect from a big executive car. The A/C should have been Climate made standard.
Costs
Fuel economy around town is a little heavy, but on long distances, it surprises you on how well it returns good MPG. Don't go to franchised dealers, independant specialist and Eurocarparts, make running a BMW as cheap as a Mondeo/Vectra, honestly!

On the road
Driving
Feels a little heavy around town, but when when sport button used and/or when kick-down past 3000rpm, the valvetronic kicks in giving good power/fast accelerarion. At higher speeds and on country lanes, handling is awesome, what a BMW does best.
Performance
Feels a little sluggish at low speeds, but Sports button changes the car, but then you lose MPG. Excellent once on the open road and the 6 cylinder is music to your ears.

Living with it
Reliability
Just had problem with the cooling system which is common, had to replace rad, water pump, viscous fan coupling and thermostat. Apart from that, the car is very reliable.
Image
Having had a Merc before, this car is better and a little less imposing, but still none the less an upmarket vehicle, for Mondeo/Vectra money.
Comfort
Comfortable in front and back. Armrests are great. The standard velour seats are relaxing and supportive, and you feel fresh after a long journey.

Security and Service
Security
Standard factory alarm/immobiliser CAT 2 and deadlocks, remote alarm with anti-grab, are all very re-assuring.
Service
Undoubtely expensive, but treat you with respect, as if you have bought a brand new Beemer.
