BMW 5-Series Saloon
  • Economy

    Value

    4 out of 5 4.0

I've always felt that BMWs were overrated and overpriced, but the E34 5-series is now quite affordable. Granite build quality and typically German attention to detail mean these cars will last forever if treated right and represent top value for money.

    Costs

    3 out of 5 3.0

Not the cheapest car to own, but you wouldn't expect them to be. Dealers are expensive, but will give small discounts if pressed. Reliability and use-dependant service indicator offset this, though.

  • On the road

    Driving

    4 out of 5 4.0

BMW sell as being drivers cars and they're not wrong. Beautifully balanced handling, sharp turn-in and controllable oversteer if you want it. Push too hard in snow and you'll be facing the traffic behind you! Let down by wooden steering feel / gearchange.

    Performance

    5 out of 5 5.0

Thrust off the line from the 24V lump is equivalent to the space shuttle at launch! Even at motoway speeds, the surge of power for overtaking is impressive. Not what you'd call heartstopping, but I can't see why anyone would need a 530, 535 or 540!

  • Living with it

    Reliability

    5 out of 5 5.0

Nothing gone seriously wrong in 3 years. Engine likes to be serviced on the button. Aluminium cylinder head hates overheating - don't let it or it'll be expensive!

    Image

    4 out of 5 4.0

Starting to date, but still agressively stylish. Classic BMW look can be improved with factory boot spoiler, Alpina alloys and clear indicators.

    Comfort

    4 out of 5 4.0

Comfortable and relaxed. Stiff body and compliant suspension give nice ride which is never harsh. Firm seats are comfortable, but a little too big to be fully supportive. Adjustable everything means it's easy to find a good driving position.

  • Security and Service

    Security

    5 out of 5 5.0

Mine's fitted with the factory option Thatcham 1 alarm/immobiliser with total closure (locks, windows, roof). High security lock barrels and keys.

    Service

    3 out of 5 3.0

Dealers are always friendly and polite until you ask for a discount, which they're obviously not used to. You'll get one if you try hard, though. DIY servicing is ok (buy a manual, though) and there are plenty of good independant BMW specialists around.

  • Problems and Ownership

    Problems

    Engine

Sturdy and silky smooth 24V straight six never misses a beat.

    Other

Windscreen wiper linkage pivot broke - easily and cheaply fixed, but involves dismantling most of the scuttle panel!
