BMW 5-Series Saloon 540i 4d (1994/M) Owner Review
-
Economy
Value
Paid R73000 (South Africa) (roughly 5000 UK pounds) for a more than full-house, executive car with more than adequate power from idling onwards.
Costs
Don't service at manufacturer. Not too heavy on fuel, considering the power.

On the road
Driving
Excellent all-rounder - smooth drive, rewarding when accelerating hard, great stopping power and great overtaking ability.
Performance
Officially tested by 2 local motoring magazines, 0-100km/h (62mph) in 7.1 and 7.3 sec and reaching a (restricted) top speed of 240kph (150mph). Great midrange acceleration too.

Living with it
Reliability
Mechanically and electronically very reliable if serviced properly - extensive service history (BMW, SA).
Image
Good, considering there's a newer model availible. Presence on the road still noticed and respected.
Comfort
Seating position can be (electronically) set to perfection. Controls within reach and well layed out. Very effective climate control. Cruise control and 'auto dim' rear-view mirror a plus.

Security and Service
Security
Comes standard with VESA level 5 alarm/immobiliser (highest security rating in SA). Satelite tracking added, as well.
Service
Servicing and reliability comments made according to BMW SA's extensive service history report of this specific car.
