  • Economy

    Value

    3 out of 5 3.0

Seems to depreciate far more rapidly than in years gone by. Good when buying, bad when selling.

    Costs

    3 out of 5 3.0

Don't expect much more than 26 mpg which isn't great as we head towards £1 per litre but reasonable I suppose for a 2.5 six-pot. When things go wrong (which they do), not cheap to mend.

  • On the road

    Driving

    4 out of 5 4.0

Must be better than most but is it really as good as the motoring journalists insist it is? Rear wheel drive and steering feel certainly appreciated.

    Performance

    3 out of 5 3.0

Faster than most but on A-roads, can't keep up with modern hot-hatches. Doesn't have the urge of latest super-diesels from BMW and MB either. However will happily cruise at 100 mph plus on 'German' motorways.

  • Living with it

    Reliability

    2 out of 5 2.0

My last car was a Honda which never fails but this one does. Cooling system leak (most serious), air con, brake sensors, c/l (plus others I can't remember) - just odd things that don't necessarily leave you stranded but can be costly and a pain to fix.

The Benz has more prestige but this is reputed to be the better car. Seems more desirable to younger types. Styling doubtedly better than the new model.

  • Security and Service

    Service

    4 out of 5 4.0

My dealer has a discounted servicing menu for older cars which is good and service standards are generally good but I now used an independent specialist.

  • Problems and Ownership

    Problems

    Engine

    Cooling system and radiator pump.

    Other

Air con condenser, brake sensors and other niggly bits.
