BMW 5-Series Touring 520i SE 5d (1992/J) Owner Review
-
Economy
Value
£3k got me a 95/M. Doesn't have the ridiculous depreceation of Ford, Vauxhall etc.
Costs
Some dealer parts are expensive, but Europarts are a cheap alternative.

On the road
Driving
Excellent driving exerience. Comfortable with good motorway cruising.
Performance
2.0 a bit sluggish. Good overtaking power though.

Living with it
Reliability
Pretty good, although impellar on water pump broke up at 95k miles and bushes now need replacing to prevent the infamous 5-series 55mph steering shimmy.
Image
Even this 8 year old car gets some approving looks because of the badge.
Comfort
Very comfy compared to Ford and Vauxhall of same age.

Security and Service
Security
Never had to use it. Immobiliser as standard.
Service
The dealership have always been polite and helpful.

Problems and Ownership
Problems
Engine
Rock solid. Broken water pump impellar caused irregular overheating. No probs since fixed.
Other
I have just developed the infamous 5-series shimmy at 55mph. New front bushes should sort this.
