BMW 5-Series Touring 525iX SE 4WD 5d (1993/K) Owner Review

Economy
Value
Decent. Values getting sensible now for Tourer, very well put together in general. Capable of massive mileages if looked after. Cheapest ones not worth effort normally. Not a real estate though, so beware serious load luggers.
Costs
Beware the 4wd, because independents like German & Swedish tend not to carry the parts, so BMW only parts mostly. Ouch! Also when driven seriously MPG is very poor. Around 20mpg combined. Double Ouch!

On the road
Driving
Good. Doesn't compare with Alfas for driving pleasure. The ultimate sterile driving machine. V8 A different story though!
Performance
About 190bhp in 4wd format, manual. As quick as most will ever need, but doesn't feel it. That's probably good for most owners. Great A-road and motorway car.

Living with it
Reliability
Just general maintenance required to keep it ticking over nicely.
Image
You will be classed as BMW driver. Sorry. Getting out of junctions will be harder in this. Although estate slightly better than my saloon. Still looks okay on the school run though.
Comfort
Good seats, nice ergonomics.

Security and Service
Security
Same as most vehicle this age.
Service
BMW dealers very aloof in my experience; only interested in selling to owners of latest model.

Problems and Ownership
Problems
Engine
A truly great power plant. Beware as tendency to sound heady when first started is not uncommon, doesn't mean much. Especially if oil level a bit low.
Other
I would have another 5 without query. Currently keep a 520i 12v for spare. Would avoid 4wd because of parts cost. Have driven 530i V8 and that is intended replacement for 520i.
Ownership
