BMW 5-Series Touring 540i 5d (1996/N) Owner Review

Economy
Value
Paid 15% of new price. Executive barnstomer for £6,000 with full BMW service history plus all the toys - a bargain!
Costs
Considering the engine size, not too expensive. Service charges are little more than smaller engine models. Average 25mpg since acquired.

On the road
Driving
Doesn't feel that fast (but it is). Very subdued unless heavy with right foot. 6 speed manual gearbox a delight and improves enjoyment. Handles very well.
Performance
Blistering. The engine is a joy and will pull strongly from any gear. When given some welly, wonderful V8 growl from the engine.

Living with it
Reliability
No problems so far.
Image
The Touring avoids the drug dealer image.
Comfort
Leather seats very comfortable. Suspension, however, is appalling on bumpy roads around town.

Security and Service
Security
BMW fitted security plus after-market alarm. For a car with supercar performance, it is very low profile and left alone.
Service
£100 intermediate service under BMW 4 plus scheme.
