Summary
What does this car say about you?
Performance, power, quality... Sadly the BMW badge is regarded by some as a target for derision or competition. Those more enlightened realise just what a complete car this is.
What do your friends / family / neighbours think of the car?
Those that travel in it appreciate the feel good factor and limousine-like ride. Many don't realise how smooth it can be while delivering such performance.
Would you buy this car again and why?
Yes. I struggle to think of a better all round car. It does nearly everything.
What are you likely to buy next?
To replace this, a BMW Touring, but it might be a 3-Series because the new 5-Series is getting just a little too large for the parking spaces at home.

Buying experience
Type of dealer you bought from?
Franchised
Did you buy this car new?
No
What price did you pay?
£30,000
When did you buy the car?
December 2005
Did you get a good deal and why?
I got more than I thought I would as trade-in on my old car. They moved the price down a little as well. I'd done the research and the market price for the car with a lot of options was fair, so I was pleased with the deal.
Is there any special reason why you bought this car?
My previous car was a BMW 525TDS Touring auto and I couldn't find a better car to replace it than a newer model.
What was the dealer like?
I had a personal contact at the dealer who was 40 miles away. They drove the car to my home for a test drive and agreed a price for my old car. They then delivered the car to my home and drove my old car away. Fantastic service.

Driving it
What's it like to drive?
Smooth straight six delivers what you need when you need it. Runs more smoothly on the softer winter tyres, even though they are run flats. Handles precisely, even after high mileage. Predictable.
What's it like to park?
Straightforward with the front and rear parking sensors. Good all round vision.

Living with it
Have you had any problems with the car?
Yes, but it has never broken down on the road. Its economy and performance still has the ability to put a smile on my face after 134,000 miles. After that mileage, the things that have had to be fixed apart from the usual are air con compressor, replacement exhaust manifold, turbocharger, glow plug controller. All of those failed in the 110,000 - 115,000 mile range. Since replacement, I've achieved the best economy and smooth performance.
What's most practical about your car?
Its versatility and ability to be a Jekyll and Hyde on demand! It has done fully loaded travel for university start of term, cross-continental family holidays to the Alps and deep snow, local short turns to the tip with garden rubbish and for enjoyment, quick runs on the autobahn and country roads.
Favourite gadget, option or accessory?
I don't have a particular favourite, but enjoy the cruise control with the auto box and the heated front leather seats. Folding electric door mirrors are also very useful and especially the lifting rear window, for boot access without lifting the tailgate in the garage.
