Standard BMW M6 Gran Coupe safety systems include tyre pressure monitoring, Emergency Call (which can automatically alert the emergency services in the event of a crash if there is no response from the car’s occupants) and ‘Dynamic Safety’ which automatically tightens the seatbelt when required and automatically applies the brakes in the event of a crash to avoid a potential secondary impact.

Front and rear parking sensors are also standard and the adaptive LED headlights’ cornering function, which projects part of the beam towards the inside of the bend at lower driving speeds, works very well.

Further safety systems available as options at extra cost include a lane change warning system, a night vision system with pedestrian recognition and a speed limit display. For those seeking extra stopping power, carbon ceramic brakes are also an option although they’re certainly not cheap…

Although it’s very much a four-seater, BMW M6 Gran Coupe practicality is boosted slightly by a third seatbelt in the back for ‘occasional use’ if you need to drop a fourth passenger off over a short distance, for example.

As it’s such a wide car, there is plenty of space in the cabin and the broad transmission tunnel includes a big central cubby box and two large cup holders under a carbon fibre cover which also provide a useful space for stowing your mobile phone.

The boot is deep and has a volume of 460 litres with the rear seats in place, although naturally given its shape carrying tall items could be tricky. The rear seat backs can be folded down in a 60:40 split and a through-load ‘ski bag’ is available as an option.
