• Summary

What does this car say about you?

This is a BMW - but not one that suggests you've bought it to make a statement.

What do your friends / family / neighbours think of the car?

Friends and family find the car comfortable in both the front and the rear. Our lurcher has no complaints about the boot, either. The climate control - although a little noisy - is excellent.

Would you buy this car again and why?

I would buy another X1, but would choose an automatic (more relaxing and probably about as economical). The X1 will never compete with my 520 tourer for sheer luxury, but one or two more items from BMW's options list will add to the driving enjoyment of what is a car I've grown to like.

What are you likely to buy next?

    Next car? A 2013 X1 SE auto.

Type of dealer you bought from?

    Franchised

Did you buy this car new?

    No

    What price did you pay?

    £0

When did you buy the car?

    November 2012

Did you get a good deal and why?

Car was competetively priced. It seems BMW released a lot of cars to dealers, once their Olympic Games sponsorship had finished.

Is there any special reason why you bought this car?

    Downsizing

    What was the dealer like?

The dealer was very friendly and had a good knowledge of the vehicle. No hard sell. Excellent communication. Couldn't have wished for better service.

    What's it like to drive?

The driving position is excellent, and being slightly raised it gives excellent visibility. The gearbox is a joy (unlike my previous experience of a BMW manual). and the ratios for the ED model are well suited to British speed limits - which hasn't always been the case with BMW . The steering is precise, and I haven't noticed the "heaviness" at low speeds that some reviewers mention. Brakes are progressive and inspire confidence. Wind, tyre and engine noise are barely noticeable. The car holds the road well - but being rear-wheel drive it probably won't like the snow. Everything seems well bolted together, but don't expect the little touches evident in models like the 5 series. Furl consumption (48) is disappointing.

    What's it like to park?

Parking is straightforward. Despite its appearance, this is not a big vehicle. Visibility is good, although the rear window is a little small. Front and rear parking sensors are very useful, as are the wing mirrors that angle down when you are reversing.

Have you had any problems with the car?

    No.

What's most practical about your car?

It is compact and therefore easy to drive.

    Favourite gadget, option or accessory?

Auto dimming/folding mirrors are useful, but my favourite option is the BMW Professional sat nav with the.Connected Drive (which allows my wife to email late additions to the weekly shopping list!).
