BMW X1 SUV (2015-2022) verdict
Should you buy a used BMW X1?
The 2015-on BMW X1, codenamed F48, was a breakthrough car for the firm. After missing the target with the original, this one hit the bullseye, taking the fight to rivals such as the Range Rover Evoque and Volvo XC40. It was sold worldwide and actually became BMW’s best-selling car.
It’s really satisfying to drive, with agile handling and a premium feel. All the engines are powerful and they’re surprisingly fuel-efficient too, particularly the diesels – and the electric range of the xDrive25e plug-in hybrid is super-impressive.
Even the earliest 2015 cars still look fresh and contemporary, too. As prices start to dip below £10k, now’s a great time to check out the smallest BMW X1 and add a touch of practical, family-friendly premium class to your driveway.
What we like about the BMW X1
Efficient, sensibly-matched engines with adequate, rather than sporty, performance. Secure handling even without xDrive, and high-tech gearboxes and gadgets that mean a used X1 really does not feel very dated at all. Useful space and practicality as well.
What we don’t like
The xDrive 25e plug-in hybrid is a bit disappointing given the cost and the potential, and as these cars age the variable servicing and old BMW timing chain issues may resurface. Service it often, like an old car, and those should be avoided.
