BMW X3 Estate (2011-2017) verdict
Should you buy one?
Absolutely. The F25 BMW X3 is a great used SUV that offers an engaging driving experience, impressive fuel economy, great practicality and stunning performance in six-cylinder guise. The fact that used prices have tanked only work to make it even more attractive for buyers – although they’ll prove a hinderance when you eventually come to sell the car.
Before diving into a purchase, just make sure your car has a good service history and that it’s had any critical recall work completed. Avoid any cars that have obviously been run on a budget, too. If owners are saving pennies by fitting off-brand tyres, they’re probably cutting corners on other maintenance items too.
What we like
The X3 was one of the best-driving SUVs of its time so, if you’re a keen driver in need of a larger car, you’ll find a lot to like here. We also love how punchy the X3’s 3.0-litre engines are, and how planted the car feels on wet and icy roads.
What we don’t like
The rear seat could have been a little more accommodating. Squeezing three people back there is quite uncomfortable. The X3 can’t compete with the likes of the Land Rover Freelander or Toyota Land Cruiser in the rough stuff, either.
