With new C3 and DS3 models on sale this year the Citroen line-up is set to be joined by another model in 2011.

The new C4 hatchback is set to take on the likes of the Ford Focus and Volkswagen Golf when it goes on sale in early 2011. Citroen has promised an improved, hi-tech interior as well as new engines that offer lower emissions and better fuel economy.

The new C4 looks echo that of the C3 that went on sale earlier this year but has new alloy wheels will that Citroen claims will give a more premium feel over the outgoing model. The manufacturer also says the cars's handling is also improved.

The new model is slightly bigger that the outgoing version at just 5cm longer, while boot space is an impressive 408-litres - that's 30 litres more than the new Vauxhall Astra.

Although full details of engines have not been announced Citroen has confirmed the C4 will come with the new micro-hyrbid e-HDi engines with stop/start. This drops emissions to 109g/km for cars set to go on sale in 2011 with future models coming down to 99g/km.

Buyers will be able to personalise the inside of their car with their choice of colour on the instrument display. Some models will also get a massage function in the front seats.

As well as existing technologies such as hill start assist, automatic electronic parking brake, lane departure warning system and bi-xenon dual-function directional headlamps, the new C4 will be available with cornering light function, cruise control, blind-spot monitoring system and a new service called eTouch.

The eTouch system enables drivers to look at their driving patterns and fuel consumption, and gives advice on how to improve this. It also offers on-board emergency assistance as well as allowing drivers to check the cars technical status and monitor any necessary maintenance or servicing.

The new Citroen C4 will go on sale in early 2011 with prices expected to start at around £15,000.
