Transport for London is looking to increase the capital's Congestion Charge from £8 to £10 but is also planning to scrap the zone's Western Extension in Kensington and Chelsea.
Mayor of London Boris Johnson has confirmed that TfL is looking to increase the charge - the £8 fee has been in existence for five years but it may increase by £2 if you pay on the day or by £1 if you register for a new automated payment channel.
A public consultation document has been published to ask for residents' views. In a bid to make the charge more eco-friendly vehicles that emit less than 100g/km of CO2 or less will be eligible for a 100% discount. To get the discount the vehicle has to meet the Euro 5 air quality standard and must be registered as new with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) on or after January 1, 2011.
Currently fully electrically propelled vehicles get a 100% discount but that could be extended to include plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs).
Proposals
- £9 per day if you register for a new automated payment channel - Congestion Charging Auto Pay
- £10 on the day of travel if paid using the existing payment channels
- £12 if paid the charging day after driving within the zone
- Fleets registered with CC Fleet Auto Pay are subject to an increase in their daily charge from £7 to £9, and the minimum number of vehicles on fleet accounts will decrease from ten to six
- The Western Extension will become exempt from the zone
The consultation process ends on August 2, 2010. If the Western Extension is exempt it will be removed from the charging zone after December 24, 2010. The other decisions under proposal, if given the green light, will come into effect on January 4, 2011.
