The Volkswagen Golf has been named as the safest car of 2009 by Euro NCAP - the agency that conducts crash tests on new cars.

The Golf scored the maximum five-star safety rating, along with many other cars tested during 2009, but its overall score put it first. This included a score of 97% in adult occupant protection, 84% in child occupant protection and 61% for pedestrian protection.

Second in the list of safest cars of 2009 was the Honda Insight followed by its fellow hybrid, the Toyota Prius, in third.

The Hyundai i20 came fourth, followed by a tie for fifth place shared between the Toyota Avensis, Volvo XC60 and Vauxhall Astra.

There is now also a full table of all the cars tested and graded by Euro NCAP in 2009.
